(Alina by mseregon, Legend by Marie Lu, Korra by Erica, The Walking Dead by Brian Robot Jameson

As we stated in a previous post, Leigh Bardugo will be at the Barnes & Noble book store at the Grove in Los Angeles on Wednesday, June 26th, with Legend author Marie Lu, Avatar and Legend of Korra creator Mike DiMartino, and The Walking Dead Co-EP Seth Hoffman.  If you’re attending (which I hope to try myself) and you like drawing, then you might be interested in this contest by New Leaf Literary:

Hello Fellow Tumblrites!  We here at New Leaf had an AWESOME idea that spawned from an AWESOME event that is happening next week (I seriously can’t wait—the fangirl in me is wigging out!).  You see, creative geniuses Michael DiMartino, Marie Lu, Seth Hoffman and Leigh Bardugo are getting together on a panel to discuss the incredibly rich worlds that they have worked on…(you might recognize some of these)
 tumblr-fan-art-contest
….and how their work and/or creative processes have evolved in the age of social media—where fans have direct access to the artists they admire and have the resources to create fantastic art and stories inspired by others.  (Which is, in my opinion, freaking awesome.) So in turn, we had an idea that involves the amazing and talented fans out there: a tumblr fanart contest!
Using the hashtag #PowerofFandom we invite you to create a piece of fanart that encompasses something from each of the panelists’ work.  Be creative!  Make it fun!  Anyone can enter!

How cool is that?!  Of course, this type of crossover may need some out-there creativity, as you it’s not generally known that characters from Avatar or Legend of Korra frequent the lots of The Walking Dead.  However, artists tend to have a very creative mind anyway.

So, get at it, and post it on Tumblr!  They might get it signed for you and even shower you with other gifts as well.  Who knows when it comes to these authors.

For all the details about the contest, go here.

New Fandoms Will Be Introduced in TheFandom.net Site!

thefandomlogo-withslogan-02-small

Last night, TheFandom.net had their first ever live hangout session in which we got to talk about the movies that are coming up for some of our fandoms that we have on the site.  However, one of the most exciting news to come from the hangout happened near the beginning of the hangout, where we revealed that we will be adding more fandoms to the site in the very near future!

A little after the 4:20 mark, I get to announce which fandoms will be getting their own fandom site, which are listed right here:

  • Daughter of Smoke & Bone (book series by Laini Taylor)
  • Graceling (book series by Kristin Cashore)
  • Legend (book series by Marie Lu)
  • Shadow & Bone (book series by Leigh Bardugo)
  • Sherlock (BBC TV Series)
  • Supernatural (The CW TV Series)
  • Under the Never Sky (book series by Veronica Rossi)

As to the reason we chose each series, it’s really just a matter of the quality of the books and the TV shows.  They either have a certain unique quality about them, either through the story that’s told, through the characters that we learn of, or both, and we’re very excited to give these fandoms an opportunity to grow on the site and expand the fandom to many other people who are looking for new books or shows to gush over.  We hope you agree with us when you do get a chance to learn about each one of them.

You can watch the rest of the hangout episode below:

I’ll send you notice when the new fandoms have been integrated into their new homes!

Manicures Based on PRODIGY and SHADOW AND BONE

nailart-legend-sb

I have done nail marbling, and it takes quite a long time to make the nails look just right, so I find this pretty amazing that this manicurist was able to do such an elegant job of using colors based on books.  Maybe one day I’ll have the patience to attempt this as well.

Next up is the sequel to a very popular book, Prodigy by Marie Lu. Again I started with 2 coats of Orly Liquid Vinyl (it really is the best black polish). Over the middle of each nail I sponged on Zoya Freya and then over that I sponged Natio Turquoise. I used a very pointy dotting tool (from a MASH Nail brush set) to draw the eagle on the ring finger using Orly Liquid Vinyl.

And lastly is Shadow & Bone by Leigh Bardugo! I used 2 coats of Zoya Freya and then I stamped using Orly Liquid Vinyl and Konad image plate M63. I used L.A Colors Art Deco Striper in Red Glitter to add dashes of red in between the lines.
I did attempt to free hand some white antlers on my ring nail but it looked bad so I re-did that nail! I also attempted my first water marbling mani before doing this one, but it was an epic fail, so I went with this look instead 🙂

Lena Duchannes, Melanie Stryder, & June Make the List of The 13 Heroines Who’ll Make 2013 Kick Ass

It’s not like we don’t know this already, but since it’s being posted from VH1, maybe more people will take notice.  I’m pretty happy with who they’ve picked, but I think there’s at least one more that easily should’ve made the list.  But hey, I could make my own list I suppose.  Anyway, here’s what VH1 had to say about Lena Duchannes, Melanie Stryder/Wanderer, and June Iparis, as well as the other girls on the list:

Meet Alden Ehrenreich and Alice Englert, the Stars of 'Beautiful Creatures' | TeenVogue.com

Lena Duchannes (Alice Englert) from ‘Beautiful Creatures’

It’s going to be a great year for heroines in movies, on TV and in books — but not necessarily the easy-to-love/worship kind. Jennifer Lawrence‘s Katniss Everdeen (this year in Catching Fire), The Americans‘ Elizabeth (Keri Russell), Beautiful CreaturesLena [Duchannes] (Alice Englert) and The Great Gatsby’s Daisy (Carey Mulligan) are complex women and girls who don’t automatically know what’s right, and sometimes they have to choose saving themselves over saving the world.

Shadow and Bone features Alina Starkov

The Mortal Instruments‘ Clary Fray (Lily Collins), Shadow and Bone’s Alina, Delirium’s Lena [Haloway] and Warm Bodies‘ Julie (Teresa Palmer) have a little self-discovery to do before they become full-fledged heroines.

June Iparis from Legend – art by author Marie Lu

The Legend Trilogy’s June and The Host’s Wanderer/Melanie (Saoirse Ronan) have to navigate between worlds to figure out whom to fight for. And Oz‘s Glinda (Michelle Williams) and Ender’s Game’s Petra [Arkanian] (Hailee Steinfeld) are ladies whose strength is obvious, but whose roles in the bigger picture remains to be seen. As for Chloe Moretz’s Hit Girl, who returns in this summer’s Kick-Ass 2 — she’s always going to be in a category all her own.

2013 will certainly be a big deal for female protagonists.  And I’d also like to add in Tessa Gray from The Infernal Devices trilogy.  Sure, she’s not the kick-ass in the general sense, but she definitely has some turmoil ahead of her, both in finding out what she is and in love.  Not easy.
